Progreso - Cruise ship and local tourist destination on the Gulf

Dine on the beach at Progreso

Mar Sisal is a short distance from the seaside town and port of Progreso (founded in 1872). Currently, however, there is no direct route between the two, which only adds to the seclusion and exclusivity of Mar Sisal.

Like Sisal, Progreso has picture perfect white sand beaches.

Progreso is a tourist destination and its waterfront has a host of restaurants and and shops. Locally produced crafts are sold by vendors.

Even with two cruise ships in port, however, the town of about 50,000 people doesn’t seem too crowded.

Progreso is connected to Merida (about 20 miles/33 km to the south) by an excellent (and newly resurfaced and expanded) divided highway (Mexico Hwy 261).
